The new 2015 ski season full of FUN and ENJOYMENT has begun! You and your child(ren) will enjoy fun filled days of skiing and socializing. Over the years we have experienced so many great moments through our involvement in the Clarenville Nordic Ski Club and in particular the Junior Ski Program. This program offers opportunities for us to make new friends, learn new skills, enjoy the great outdoors and most of all…HAVE FUN!!! As Parents you are an important part of the JR Program and we hope that you will share with us your thoughts, ideas and energy to ensure that this program continues to provide fun and enjoyment for all. If you are able to lend a helping hand or you have suggestions for games/activities, we would love to hear from you!
We have prepared a number of answers to some
common questions that parents:
What can I do to assist with the Program?
Assist a JR Leader on the trail e.g setting up obstacle courses
Assist children with their equipment
Accompany children who have to return to the chalet
Light a campfire
Put wood in the stove in the chalet
Help keep the chalet clean
Help with Special Events
NOTE: To assist leaders, children 7 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
Where will the program be held?
We meet at the Lee Churchill Chalet, White Hills
When will the program take place?
Saturdays 11 am- 12:00pm (We ask that you be there at 10:45am)
NOTE: The duration of the program will vary for all skiers. Leaders will judge the time based on the skiers in their group. If the session is cancelled you will receive an e-mail. (Call your leader if you are unsure.)
Should I label my children’s ski equipment and clothing?
YES! This is a must as the chalet is a very busy place. Skiers are also asked to use the ski rack provided to ensure safety around the chalet.
Does my child record the distances (km) and the number of times they ski?
Yes. It is a fun thing to see how far you have skied in a winter. All children are encouraged to record the distances (km) and number of times they ski, including distances skied during their participation in the program and on their own e.g. a family ski, with their school class etc. Parents of children 5 and under can record 1 km for every ½ hour skied.
How do I dress my child for the Program?
It is still recommended to dress in layers however warmer clothing is often required to ensure that the skier remains warm in between active and inactive periods. For many young children, a regular snow jacket and pants with layers of inside clothing is recommended. For older children, layers of clothing including long underwear, track pants and wind proof pants along with a undershirt, turtleneck, sweatshirt and breathable windbreaker jacket is recommended. Layers allow you to add or take away clothing to adjust to activity and temperature levels. Always pack extra mitts and wear a hat.
How do I dress my child for Tours?
There will be times when the older junior skiers will be going on tours e.g. a ski around the Harry’s Loop. When dressing for tours, skiers should wear layers of clothing starting with a layer next to the skin which will take the sweat away from their bodies; a layer of pants( not jeans) and a shirt (e.g. turtleneck); a warmth layer like a fleece or vest; an outer wind proof pants and jacket. A breathable hat/headband and gloves/mitts. It is a good idea to carry an extra pair of mitts in your backpack. Always bring something to drink.
Should I pack drinks/snacks/lunches for my child?
YES! Young skiers will use of lots of energy. Parents are asked to pack a drink, preferably some water, and snack. Lunch at the Chalet is also a fun time for the skiers…and they have quite an appetite after a morning of skiing. The fire pit will also be available at all times this year so a lunch over the campfire is always an option!
